The transfer to Bansko takes from 2 1/2- 3 hours. You are better prebooking the taxi and there are a number of companies which offer this service:

Alternatively, get the local bus from the centre of Sofia.
Car hire – prebook winter accessories (e.g. snow chains) and consider a satnav – though be careful with this as it took us over the mountains – most direct, but definitely the longest!
